What went well?
- I finished the first year of chess study. In addition to these [weekly updates]](/tags/weeklyupdate/), I have also been writing quarterly summaries. The latest one is out including a chart of the time I spent on Chessable and Chess.com.
- I took 48 hours off with no chess. No chess books, no Chessable (but I had a streak freeze protect in place), no puzzles, no tactics, nothing. It was good to take a break for a couple days and I think that reset is needed once in awhile.
- I created a new study plan for January
What could have gone better?
- The holidays at the end of the year meant I did less studying than I would have liked. I played 3 rapid games (won 2, lost 1).
- I ended the year with a Chess.com rapid rating of 1200. I was really hoping to have gained some points here, since that is the same rating I had in June.
What will I try next?
- I plan to update my training plan to include a small amount of opening study

2021 Recap:
— Matt (@MattPlaysChess) December 27, 2021
First 6 months: Rating from 800 to 1200
Second 6 months: 1200 to… 1200
Played more, studied more, but my rating didn’t go up. But I’m sure I’m just building up potential energy and I’m taking off in 2022. Watch out!#chesspunks
